Manufacturing Update #05

Dear backers,

Thank you for your cooperation in completing the BackerKit surveys. All orders made before February 2021 have now been locked and charged, marking another important milestone towards shipping. For newer backers, don’t worry, your orders are not yet locked. You will still receive the BackerKit survey within 14 days and we will be locking your orders at a later date.

With that out of the way, today we would like to give you an update regarding the ongoing manufacturing process. 

In the last week, we’ve finally received a few shipments from our suppliers that we have been waiting for. As communicated previously, there is a huge surge in shipping volume worldwide, leading to shipping delays as there are a lack of available ships. Thankfully, we’ve managed to take delivery of a few crucial components. Our engineering team has evaluated the quality of the received parts with mixed results.

Some of the parts like the planetary gearset are of impressive quality. We’re really happy with the results for this crucial component.

Some of the other parts that we’ve received. The quality is to our expectations.

However, the engineering team has also raised concerns about certain parts. For example, some pieces of the frame arrived slightly bent due to shoddy packaging that led to damage during the shipping process.

We are also less than impressed with the workmanship quality on certain parts. A major concern for us is that many units of the structural frame were not properly welded (likely due to an inexperienced worker). The alignment is out and we suspect that the frame was welded without the use of fixtures. Rest assured that we will not be tolerating this level of quality and have already asked our supplier for a new batch with a firm emphasis placed on the quality level expected.

We also encountered problem with the steerer tube supplier. The internal diameter was not made according to our specifications, resulting in it being to small for the starnut to be pressed in.

Please rest assured that we are working hard to resolve these issues as soon as possible. However, many of our suppliers are closed for the Chinese New Year holidays (1-2 weeks), which translates to a slowdown in activities during this period.

Our commitment to quality remains absolute, and we will continue to test and perform robust quality control on every individual part that goes into each bike that we manufacture. We will continue to provide updates when more parts are delivered to our assembly line in Penang. With bike parts being in short supply worldwide due to the ongoing pandemic, we are pushing hard for our suppliers to continue shipping parts over after the Chinese New Year holidays.
