Deep dive into the Triple Barrier Antitheft system

Motivation and functionality

Back when we first started to design Reevo, we knew from the very start that we wanted to build a robust security system into the bike. Bicycle theft is a huge problem worldwide, and a stunning bike like Reevo is likely to attract even more attention. We did our homework, and quickly realised that many bikes are stolen simply because the owner is too lazy to lock the bike or forgot to carry a chain / keys. Basically, preventable mistakes. We believe that these are fundamental human errors that could easily be solved by technology. Technology that makes it more convenient for owners, and takes away the possibility of unintended mistakes.

Triple Barrier Security System

We’re very proud of the security system that we’ve developed for Reevo. In fact, we consider it one of our key innovations in addition to the hubless wheel.

We wanted to create a security system that solves the forgetfulness and laziness of owners (like ourselves – guilty as charged), and what better way to begin than with a key that you’re born with – your fingerprint. Previously, we’ve covered the biometric access module in detail in our inaugral Mini Series, so we won’t be elaborating too much here. You can refer back to Mini Series #1 for more information on how the fingerprint module functions.

The biometric sensor allows you access to your bike via a unique key that is always with you and can never be lost. But there is still the question of the locking mechanism. As avid bikers ourselves, we always hated carrying around bulky chains, so we decided to build an integrated electronic lock that deploys when the “invisible” kickstand (Mini Series #5) is swung down.

Locking the bike via the biometric sensor (or app) activates an electronic actuator that prevents the kickstand and wheel from being released, thus securing your bike. This mechanism was designed to prevent the bike from being ridden without your permission. No bulky chains needed!

The next barrier is an integrated motion sensor that activates when you lock the bike. When activated, this sensor continuously scans for movements on the bike. At this stage, the GPS is not yet activated to conserve battery and data. If a movement is deemed suspicious according to a dedicated chip in the bike, an alarm will go off to act as a deterrent, eliminating up to 87% of the risk according to our research.

Concurrently, a phone call (robocall) will be made to your registered phone number to alert you in real time. At this stage, the GPS module is also turned on and primed for action. Tracking begins when the bike leaves its defined geofence around the parking area. You’ll be able to follow the bike’s movements on your phone via the Reevo app.

The security system is powered by a hidden backup battery which provides up to 10 hours of standby power when the main battery is disconnected. Charging begins automatically when the main battery is reconnected.

 

Location Location Location

For full functionality of the GPS and GSM features, a nano SIM card is needed (can be obtained from your network provider). Other security features such as the biometric authentication, sensing, and electronic locking will still function even without a SIM card.

The bike uses a Qualcomm 4G chipset which is location specific. Therefore it is extremely important that your bike ships with a chipset that works in your region as 4G technnology is unfortunately region specific. In total, there are 6 variants:

  • United States (all carriers except Verizon)
  • EU / Asia
  • China
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Australia / Latin America

The bike will be assembled with a chipset that works for your region based on the address provided in BackerKit. Please let us know if you have plans to use the bike in another region.

Update Your Details on BackerKit

If you have not already done so, please ensure that your shipping details and bike configuration details are accurate. As mentioned above, your shipping location is extremely important not only for delivery, but to ensure that you receive a correct variant with a working 4G chipset.

  • The BackerKit survey will be sent out to all backers within 14 days from your date of purchase to collect your shipping address and bike configuration details.
